“From Idea to Cambridge” Programme

The programme “From Idea to Cambridge” is a high-level pre-incubation programme implemented by the University of Latvia in cooperation with universities in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Its aim is to develop students’ ideas, strengthen their innovation capabilities, and prepare competitive innovation proposals at an international level. The total duration of the programme is five months.
The programme consists of two stages:
Latvia module (12 weeks) – Includes lectures and practical workshops on design thinking, customer research, financial planning, MVP development, and presentation skills. Teams work alongside experts and entrepreneurs.
Cambridge module (1 week) – An intensive programme in which students are introduced to the global innovation environment, collaborate with international experts, visit companies, and further develop their ideas. During this stage, feedback is provided by international experts.
Between the two modules, additional workshops are organised to strengthen ideas and prepare teams for the international stage.

To promote the development of students’ entrepreneurial skills and innovation potential in an international environment.
To provide students with knowledge, practical tools, and mentoring support for the development and refinement of their ideas.
To help students transform ideas into viable solutions and prepare for international competition.
To foster collaboration between the university, the business environment, and international partners.

Participation in the programme is team-based. Following the selection of innovation proposals, students are provided with training, consultations with experts, and guidance from industry professionals. Each team is assigned a supervisor whose role is to ensure the structured progression of the work and to oversee the development of the innovation and prototype.
The programme is organized by the University of Latvia Innovation and Acceleration Center within the ERDF co-funded project No. 1.1.1.7/1/25/A/005 “Innovation Grants for Students of the University of Latvia.”

Who can apply to the programme “From Idea to Cambridge”?
A team of students consisting of 2–3 members, of whom at least one must be enrolled in a Bachelor’s, professional, Master’s, Doctoral, or residency study programme at a Latvian or international higher education institution.
When will the programme take place and how long will it last?
Applications for the programme are open until 12 April 2026 at 23:59. The programme will run for four months, from 22 April 2026 to 23 August 2026. Sessions are mostly scheduled for Wednesday evenings from 18:00 to 20:00. Remote participation and/or session recordings are not provided.
In what language will the programme be conducted?
All planned programme activities will be conducted in English to ensure international collaboration, support participants’ professional development in a global environment, and facilitate effective communication with international experts and partners.
Will all teams travel to Cambridge, or only the winners?
The Cambridge module is intended for all teams admitted to the programme. It will also host the programme’s final Demo Day, where teams will present their solutions and compete for a prize fund of EUR 5,000.
Is it possible to receive academic credits for participating in the programme?
No, academic credits are not awarded for participation in the programme. However, participants who successfully complete the programme will receive a certificate.
What kind of support can I expect during the programme?
Funding – Support of up to EUR 3,506 for the development of your idea, covering expert fees, materials and services, as well as mobility expenses.
Cash prizes – A total prize fund of EUR 5,000 in one-off scholarships for top-performing teams on Demo Day.
Infrastructure and support – Access to LU OpenLab equipment for prototype development, as well as professional consultations with experts and industry specialists.
What is the Cambridge module and when will the trip take place?
The Cambridge module is a one-week intensive programme from 16 to 23 August 2026. During this time, students will explore the global innovation environment, work with international experts, visit companies, and further develop their ideas. Feedback from international experts will be provided.
How many teams will be accepted into the programme?
Up to 15 teams are planned to be admitted to the programme.
Can the budget submitted with the application be changed during the programme?
No, once the idea application and budget have been submitted, the budget cannot be changed during the programme.
